Now when it comes to off-page SEO techniques for the images it can't be the same as on-page SEO techniques and so our alt text or filename is not going to help. Let's look into some of the best practices to follow for off-page image optimization.

  • Always use high-quality images for Pinterest pins. No buddy will like to see noisy, blur or small images in your pin. 
  • Go for taller or vertical pins as these images will more likely get noticed by users than those small images.
  • Write a thoughtful and strong description for pinned images. This will help to display your images in search results when someone makes a search for it.
  • Research on keywords to be used for your pin by performing a search on Pinterest for similar image and write headlines accordingly.
  • Pin consistently to pull the attention of rest of the users. 
  • Write home-page or web page link in your image pin.
  • For Instagram images, add watermark to your image. It will help you promote your brand.
  • Add your keywords to the image by using hashtags. There is no way to add a web page link. Even if you add it in comments, it wouldn't work as Instagram doesn't allow it.

In fact, Google says in their article that in order to get a higher rank for the website, a webmaster should try to get links from the high-quality websites.

Hence, 1 quality link from a good quality site could be a lot better than 100 low-quality sites. When Google crawls your web pages, they keep a log of what content is been shared on the web page by indexing them. They analyze your keywords as well as the number of links from the external sites and authority of these external sites.

  • Try to get backlinks from the trusted and high-authority websites from your niche. 
  • .edu and .gov websites have high authority and hence try to get backlinks from these sites.

Let's assume that we have done all primary work needed to be done on the website. i.e. we have added quality content, we have added keywords and have optimized all pages for search engines. So our next concern is to get backlinks from the right sources to rank better in SERPs.

To identify the quality link sources for backlinks you need to study the websites which are already successful in your niche. Competitor's link analysis let you understand how they are connected to other sites on the internet and what methodology and platforms they are using for link building.

The first step in this procedure is to identify your competitors. Make Google search by using primary keywords of your blog and list 10 sites which appear in search result. Check if these sites fall in your niche and make a complete list of 10 websites in an Excel file.

There are a couple of free tools (OpenLinkProfiler, SEMRUSH, Open Site Explorer) with limited usage which I assume are sufficient enough to track your competitor's link analysis in small chunks. However, if you wish to use premium services which gives you full details without any limitations I'll recommend using SEMRUSH for its simplicity to use.

By using link tracking tools mentioned above track the competitor's website for backlinks sources, high authority domain linking, testimonials links, directory links,  guest post links, and dead links. Also, you will have to keep a tab on it by making this check in every week or a month for the new backlinks acquired by your competitor.

An excel file with backlink data should also have details like domain authority rank, anchor text, top ranking web pages from these domains which will help you plan a strategy for your backlinking exercise.

Finally, our aim of tracking competitor site is to get high authority backlinks for our site. Therefore, approach site owners for any link opportunity you find through this tracking process, submit your site to directories or fix broken links by offering your site link as a replacement.

Guest blogging or guest post writing is nothing but writing a post on someone else's site and in return, you get a backlink to your site. Guest blogging is still could be a highly effective strategy for link building and getting traffic to your site. Despite that many of the bloggers doubt it's effectiveness and write content from sole objective to get a backlink.

Keep below-mentioned tips in mind when writing a guest post:

  • Write quality post which provides valued information and experience to the user than writing a low-quality post. A qualitative post will influence readers to visit back to your site for more such work.
  • To get approval for a guest post from an established blogger, you should engage yourself commenting on his blog posts, sharing his content on a very frequent basis to grab his attention. And, one day the blog owner may contact you if he is really convinced by your actions.
  • Your guest post should be just like any normal post you write on your site. You need to include high-authority links from external sources and maybe just 2-3 links of your own site.

  • Web directories not only help us in building backlinks but also in getting massive exposure to your site. Increased traffic could help you increase your revenue or sell your products faster.

Make a notepad or excel whatever you prefer and write down below things:

  • Your site URL
  • Site title
  • Description text
  • Important keywords
  • Valid email to register
  • RSS feed URL
  • Social media links
  • Site category
Now visit authoritative web directory sites and fill in these details to include your site in these directories. I made several searches to find free web directories that actually work in 2017. A simple way to get traffic and the backlinks from a forum is to search for the problem statement by using specific keywords that relate to your article. But before this, you will have to create your profile with basic details and your site link. Once it is done, click on the relevant thread that relates to your site page and provides a solution to the problem mentioned in a thread. Finally, mention your site link in the description.

  • Be relevant to the topic of the thread and don't go off track. Don't spam every thread with the same content but be creative in your communication.
  • Engage in conversation with other members and build a friendly relationship with them. 
  • Also while you help other members create a value-add through your solutions.

        Whereas in the case of HTTPS which uses an extra layer called as SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to transfer the data in a more secure way and avoid unauthorized access to the confidential information being sent.

        • Minimize unnecessary client-side scripts and javascript

Hence do not refrain yourself from adding links to the other posts in your blog post. But while adding these links add them only to the meaningful places than overstuffing them all over.

        Why it is necessary for adding links? Because it helps Google understand the architecture of your blog. More the links google will be able to crawl through your pages, more pages will be indexed resulting more visibility for your blog.

        From search engine perspective, the title is used by search engines to display your web page. The more clicks you will be able to get from SERP better will be your site rank. Secondly, the same title is used by social media platforms to generate a summary box when someone shares the link of your web page.

        SEO Best Practices:

        Below are the tips for crafting a good title for your web page:
        • The title should be attractive enough to draw visitors attention and pursue visitors to click on your link in SERP.
        • The length of the title should not exceed 70 characters including the spaces. If it exceeds Google will truncate it to display the title in one line.
        • The important keywords of your post should be included at the beginning of the title as most of the users tend to pay attention to the initial words placed in the title. Also, it should be formed in a such a way that it looks like a naturally formed sentence or phrase.
        • Do not overstuff your title with the keywords and only include the most important keywords in your title. The overstuffed title may create a negative impression and may not rank well in SERP.

        A free tool Google Keyword Planner helps you to target the correct keywords for your blog post.  Also, you could use the search related phrases that appear at the bottom of the Google page results.

        An important point to note that as Google announces that they are no longer using a meta keyword tag from a long period to decide a ranking factor of a web page. Due to excessive use of the irrelevant keywords in a web page by users Google discontinued referring to keywords mentioned in the meta keywords tag as the new policy tends to give more quality results in the SERP. Hence adding meta keywords is not going to make any difference.

        SEO Best Practices:
        • Use keyword planner tool to decide keywords to be used in a blog post
        • Use long tailed keywords to drive more traffic to your blog. The commonly used or shorter one has more competition and are not easy to get higher rank in SERP. Long-tailed keywords have less competition and are easy to target to search engines and the users.
        • For better results place the keywords in the ideal places. The most important keywords should be placed in the title, URL of a web page, meta description tag and in the first paragraph of your blog post.
        • All secondary keywords can be distributed and placed in more natural formed sentences throughout the blog post.
        • Using keywords in the tag, bold words and alt text of the images also helps a web page optimized for search engines.
        • In order stay in the competition, you will have to update the keywords on a periodical basis to meet the new requirements and changing trends.

        8. Writing functional meta description

        The aim of the meta tag is to provide information about your web page to search engines. In this context meta description is the small paragraph written for the purpose to describe the inner content of your web page to the search engines and your potential visitors.

        There is no limit on setting how your meta description should be long but generally, Google truncates the end part if it is exceeding 160 characters. Google does not use it for ranking your web page but a well-written description could help your web page get better Click Through Rate (CTR).

        • Include important keywords in your meta description text. The search engines highlight these words by displaying them in bold text when someone makes a query into the search engine.
        • Meta description text should be simple to understand by all users yet compelling to drive users attention and make him click on your link.
        • It is fact that search engines do not always use meta description text in SERP. Instead, they use most relevant text from your web page for the query entered by the user. Hence you should always focus more on writing a qualitative blog post than meta description.
        • Each page on your site should have a unique meta description.

        9. H1 to H6 heading tags

        Do not get confused between header ( <head> ) tag and heading ( <h1> to <h6> ) tag. The header tag is used to define web page header and information of the web page. Whereas heading tags are used to define a section of the web pages and treated as heading to the various web page sections.

        • H1 to H6 let you define heading for your web page. Though it is advisable not to use all of these heading tags to create a better impact on the users and search engines.
        • Use H1 tag only for once throughout the web page. Use it so wisely that creates a good understanding of information inside it to the user and search engine. Generally, it is used to write the title of the blog post at the beginning of the blog post.
        • Use H2 for all other subsequent headings to structure the entire blog post.

        10. Optimizing images

        Using images in a blog post is a good practice to enhance the appeal of the overall blog post. However, if these images are not optimized for search engines, you are losing a good chance of having visibility to more visitors.

        The main difficulty arises when search engine bots are not able to understand the images as they cannot look through images as humans do. They need a text which is been associated with images to understand the content of the images and how it is related to rest of the content on a blog page.

        SEO Best Practices:
        • Give a readable file name to each image before you upload it for your blog post. Avoid using spaces in the file name as it renders "%20" character in URL of the image which makes it difficult to read. Also, do not use an underscore ( _ ) in the file name to separate two words as the whole string is considered as a single word which makes search engines difficult to understand it. Use a hyphen ( - ) to separate words in a filename which search engine can easily understand. "my-image-for-a-blog-post" is a good example of a filename optimized to meet search engine expectations.
        • Use .jpeg format if possible rather than using other formats as jpeg images come in lesser file size.
        • Do not include high-resolution images as it is. Instead, resize and compress them and use them in web preferences format.
        • Include alt text in images for search engines to understand the content of the images.
        • Optimized images have a better experience, faster load time and eventually reduces bounce rate of the web page.

        11. Internal Links

        The internal link is the link that redirects a user to a different web page of the same website. So basically it is the link of another web page from your website.

        Having internal links in your blog post is essential because it helps a search engine understand the architecture or the structure of your website. Adding internal links to your blog post helps visitors stay on your website and increase user engagement.

        • Add internal links at meaningful places in your blog post. It helps Google understand the structure of your website and have better visibility to other posts.
        • Internal links reduce bounce rate and increase your rank in search engines for particular keywords.
        • Internal links create a better user experience through important links placed inside the article.
        • Ensures to develop a page authority across the site for various blog posts.

        12. Anchor text

        Anchor text is nothing but the text on which hyperlink is applied. The anchor text sends a signal to search engines and hence a factor to be considered in SEO practices.

        The purpose of having URL was to display a text that human could read instead of displaying numbers (IP address). A URL doesn't drive your ranking immediately but influences the CTR.

        Hence it is necessary to write perfect URL for your blog. A URL slug (Slug is the descriptive text in the URL added after the domain name) should clearly state the what is your page about.

        • Consider below tips for writing an SEO friendly URL.
        • An URL should consist of important keywords from your blog post. It should match the title text of your blog post. So it doesn't create confusion in the mind of visitors of being these two things different.
        • Keep the URL text simple, easily readable but compelling enough to draw visitors attention.
        • Keep them short as Google truncates the long URL.
        • Google completely ignores the stop words like(a, and, but, or, of, the, etc.) has no value in SEO, but adding them increases a better readability. So adding them to very important places where it serves the purpose has no harm.
        • Do not include spaces or underscores to separate the words in URL. Google encourages to use hyphens instead of underscores.
