5 Things you Should Know Before you Start a Blog

Welcome to the article on 5 things you should know before you start a blog!

I assume that you have decided to post your ingenious ideas on the blog. It's never too late to start a blog. Go along with the below simple and easy to understand, step-by-step instructions and set-up your own blog without worrying about too many technical jargons.

There are a small number of things you should know before you start a blog. These actions are interconnected with each other and hence don't get confused on where to start from. Instead, note down all those things and follow a simple step-by-step approach to complete them.

Below steps will help you understand the primary work need to be done before you dive into the actual process of starting a blog. So, let's see where to start from.

1. Choosing a blogging platform.

There are numerous blogging platforms available on the internet. WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, LiveJournal, Wix, TypePad, Ghost are a few popular ones to name. Each one offers unique and satisfactory services.

Also, if you wish to host and manage your blog by own then there is another Wordpress service, i.e. Wordpress.org for which you will have to buy a domain name for a website and hosting space. I'll advise try the free services listed above first and then go for the advance version.

I chose Google's Blogger service as it is convenient with Google's other services like Analytics, Webmaster, AdSense, etc., it is free, and it is very easy to use. These services might be useful to you in later phases of your blogging experience. Do a little research on the services offered by blogging platforms and see if they meet your requirements. 2. Selecting your niche (subject).

Once you have decided on which blogging platform to start with next the devious job is to select the topic for your blog. Think what your personality or experience relates to and choose the topic accordingly.

Don't get confused with too many ideas and stay stuck with your prominent choice. Make sure your blog topic is interesting and knowledgeable. Select suitable title (in my case I chose Blogging Hacks) and domain (https://www.blogging-hacks.com) for the blog along with the topic.

One more important thing while choosing a domain name that it comes in a variety of options. So do a little research on which domain name is suitable.for your blog.

3. Understanding dashboard interface.

A dashboard is a centralized place from where you can manage and control your blog. You can set the theme for the blog, set sidebar elements, fonts, colors, etc., manage comments and so many other things from the same interface. We will have a closer look on dashboard interface post setting the domain name of the blog.

Understand all the functionality offered by the blogging service provider. Go through each menu link and see what all changes happen upon changing the settings. It is good to experiment functionalities before you start publishing a large number of posts. I would suggest watching 20-30 mins beginners guide video on YouTube to understand the complete interface of the Dashboard.

I have explained the Blogger dashboard in great detail in the article How to Write the First Blog Post. All blogging platforms listed in point #1 offers almost the same dashboard interface. Hence reading this article would be worthy of your time.

4. Choosing the right template for your blog.

Half of the difficult job is done once you are acquainted with dashboard interface. Now you need to choose a right, decent-looking template for your blog. This template should complement the subject you have chosen for the blog. It should also offer the latest technologies/trends concerning website development and designing.

You may choose to have features like the responsiveness of the web page on different size screens, easy customization, color options, if theme offers sidebar, etc.

5. Your web page must have these elements.

When you set-up your template you should consider keeping these widgets/gadgets. A plugin/gadget/widget to show the list of all posts from where your readers can access them, an archive of all posts if there are too many posts, subscribe link, followers link, advertisements, social media plugins, RSS subscription link, etc.

This list of the elements may vary depending upon your needs. Hence make a note of all widgets you wish to add on your blog.

Concluding on the point that we have all the details we needed to start a blog. In this guide we learned about:

Do let me know through your comments if at all, you have any questions.
